Girls Rule at Record Setting Scholastic Tournament
Date: 09/17/05
The September OCG Scholastic Tournament was held this past Saturday, September 17th. The tournament was a tremendous success. It was, in fact, the largest turnout ever for a regular scholastic tournament at OCG, with 55 total players. A large part of this success was the participation of two school teams, who have tremendous chess coaches. Brother Andrew of Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, and Coach Michael Cohen of Meadow Woods have both done a great deal for both chess and their students. They have dedicated much of their time and effort to teach and promote chess, organizing clubs in their respective schools, and enriching the lives of their students. Both schools brought record numbers of students for this scholastic tournament and we would like to thank them! It was no surprise that Trinity Catholic High School and Meadow Woods Middle School finished in first and second in the team standings, earning each school a trophy.
In the individual standings, however, the girls stole the show! First place overall was won by Sarah Errafay, the only player who finished with a perfect 5 points. Right behind her in second was Kaitlyn Rader, who finished in second with 4 points, losing only to Sarah in the final round in a gutsy and well-fought first place determining game. There were a total of 16 female players in the tournament, another record for OCG.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the tournament. It was a great event with tremendous chess, sportmanship and fun. It was truly amazing to have a tournament where not a single player finished with zero points, and not a single player even requesting a half point bye. We look forward to the next Scholastic Tournament to be held at OCG on Saturday October 15th. Don't miss it!
